FAQs
How Often Should I Visit the Dentist?
To maintain optimal dental health with general and preventive dentistry, we recommend that healthy patients visit our dental office for a hygiene appointment and examination once every six months.
Patients with dental health problems, such as periodontal disease, or who have dental appliances, such as braces, might need to visit more frequently for ongoing care and treatment adjustments.
How Does Dental Health Affect General Health and Wellbeing?
Practicing good oral hygiene does more than protect the health of your teeth and gums; it also safeguards the health of your whole body.
Poor oral health and conditions like periodontal disease (gum disease) have been linked to systemic health concerns such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, dementia, rheumatoid arthritis, and reproductive health problems.
Additionally, the health of your teeth and gums can affect how you eat, drink, speak, and look. Any oral health problems that affect the normal function of your teeth can lead to functional problems and painful symptoms that hinder your quality of life.
What Should I Expect During a Dental Appointment?
A regular, bi-annual dental checkup consists of two parts: a dental cleaning and an examination. During your dental cleaning, one of our dental hygienists uses special tools to clean the surfaces of your teeth, removing plaque and tartar buildup while also scrubbing away surface stains with a process called scaling and polishing.
Once your teeth are cleaned, one of our dentists examines your teeth, gums, oral cavity, and neck for signs of dental health problems and other health concerns, such as oral cancer.
We then talk with you about your oral hygiene routine, anything of concern that we may have detected and provide you with a variety of recommended treatment options, if necessary. Additionally, we might also recommend taking a set of dental x-rays that help us screen your teeth for signs of disease that cannot be detected with the naked eye.
What If Dental Anxiety Keeps Me From Visiting the Dentist?
If you experience anxiety at the dentist’s office or fear visiting the dentist, you are not alone. In fact, dental anxiety and phobias prevent many people from accessing the dental care they need to keep their teeth, gums, and bodies healthy.
We offer various sedation dentistry options designed to help you relax in the dental chair while getting the care you need to protect your health.
If you experience dental anxiety, we encourage you to talk with a member of our dental care team or one of our dentists about your options for sedation dentistry and learn more about how we can accommodate your needs while providing you with exceptional dental care.
